Updating Your Aadhaar Address Online
Moving to a new home or city? Your Aadhaar address must be kept up to date, as it's used across a wide range of government and financial services. The good news is that UIDAI allows residents to update their address online without visiting an enrollment center — as long as you have a valid document and a registered mobile number.
Prerequisites Before You Start
- Your mobile number must be registered with your Aadhaar (to receive OTP).
- You need a valid Proof of Address (PoA) document.
- The document must be in PDF or JPEG format, not exceeding 2 MB.
Accepted Proof of Address Documents
| Document Type | Issued By |
|---|---|
| Passport | Ministry of External Affairs |
| Voter ID / EPIC | Election Commission of India |
| Driving Licence | Regional Transport Office |
| Electricity / Water / Gas Bill | Utility Provider (not older than 3 months) |
| Bank Passbook / Statement | Any scheduled bank (not older than 3 months) |
| Rental / Lease Agreement | Notarised or registered |
| NREGS Job Card | State Government |
Step-by-Step: Online Address Update
- Visit ssup.uidai.gov.in (Self Service Update Portal).
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the CAPTCHA code.
- Click "Send OTP" — a one-time password will be sent to your registered mobile.
- Enter the OTP and click "Login".
- Select "Address" as the field you want to update.
- Fill in your new address carefully in all the required fields.
- Upload your supporting PoA document (PDF/JPEG, under 2 MB).
- Review your details and click "Submit Update Request".
- You'll receive a URN (Update Request Number) via SMS — save this for tracking.
What If Your Mobile Is Not Registered?
If your mobile number isn't linked to your Aadhaar, you cannot use the online portal. In this case, you'll need to visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrollment center with your documents. The operator will update your address offline after biometric verification.
Address Update via Address Validation Letter
UIDAI also offers an Address Validation Letter service for residents who don't have standard PoA documents. Under this process:
- You request a secret code letter to be sent to your new address.
- Once received, you use the code to verify and confirm the update online.
This is especially useful for people staying in rented accommodations or with relatives.
Tracking Your Update Request
You can track the status of your update using the URN at uidai.gov.in → Check Aadhaar Update Status. Processing generally takes 5–10 business days. Once approved, you can download your updated e-Aadhaar with the new address.
Important Tips
- Double-check spellings before submitting — corrections require a new request.
- Each update request may attract a nominal service fee (currently ₹50) at offline centers.
- Online updates via the SSUP portal are free of charge.
