Why Link Aadhaar with PAN?

The Government of India has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN Card under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act. This measure helps eliminate duplicate PAN cards, reduce tax evasion, and streamline financial records. Failure to link can result in your PAN becoming inoperative, which prevents you from filing returns, opening bank accounts, and conducting high-value financial transactions.

Who Must Link Aadhaar with PAN?

All individuals who hold both an Aadhaar number and a PAN card are required to link them — except:

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Individuals aged 80 years or above
  • Residents of Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and Meghalaya (as per applicable exemptions)
  • Those who are not Indian citizens

Method 1: Link via the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

  1. Visit incometax.gov.in and click on "Link Aadhaar" under the Quick Links section.
  2. Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number.
  3. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card.
  4. If only the birth year is mentioned on Aadhaar, check the relevant box.
  5. Enter your mobile number and click "Link Aadhaar".
  6. An OTP will be sent to your mobile. Enter it to confirm.
  7. Pay the applicable fee (if applicable) via the payment gateway.
  8. You'll receive a confirmation message once the request is submitted.

Method 2: Link via SMS

You can also initiate linking by sending an SMS from your registered mobile:

Format: UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN>

Send to: 567678 or 56161

Example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F

Fee for Late Linking

If you are linking after the deadline set by the Income Tax Department, a late fee of ₹1,000 is applicable. This fee must be paid through Challan No./ITNS 280 under "Other Receipts" before proceeding with the linking request on the portal.

How to Check If Your Aadhaar-PAN Are Already Linked

  1. Go to incometax.gov.in → Link Aadhaar Status.
  2. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
  3. Click "View Link Aadhaar Status".
  4. The portal will show whether they are linked, pending, or not linked.

Name Mismatch Issues

One of the most common problems during linking is a name mismatch between Aadhaar and PAN records. If names don't match exactly:

  • Update your name in Aadhaar via the UIDAI portal (if Aadhaar has the error).
  • Submit a name correction request on the NSDL or UTI portal (if PAN has the error).
  • After the correction is processed (usually 7–10 days), retry the linking.

Consequences of Not Linking

  • Your PAN will become inoperative (treated as if you don't have one).
  • Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) may be deducted at a higher rate.
  • You won't be able to file income tax returns.
  • Financial transactions above ₹50,000 may be blocked.

It's strongly advisable to complete the linking process at the earliest to avoid disruption to your financial activities.
